Face masks: choose by risk, then by fit
The right mask depends on what you need protection from. A 3-ply surgical-style mask is a good everyday barrier against droplets and splashes; a respirator such as an N95 or KN95 filters fine particles but only works when it seals to the face. Tell us the use and we supply the type that fits it.
At a glance
- 3-ply disposable masks suit daily use, shops, offices and visitors.
- Respirators (N95, KN95, FFP2) suit higher-risk settings and smoky or dusty air, provided they fit and seal.
- Disposable masks are single use: replace when damp, dirty or damaged.
- Ask for the standard printed on the box, for example EN 14683 or ASTM F2100 for medical masks.

Surgical mask, KN95 or N95: what is the difference?
| Type | How it protects | Good for | Standards to look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-ply disposable (surgical-style) | Loose barrier against droplets and splashes; filters some particles | Daily use, offices, shops, visitors | EN 14683 Type I, II or IIR; ASTM F2100 Level 1 to 3 |
| N95 respirator | Seals to the face and filters at least 95% of fine test particles | Clinics, caring for the sick, dust and smoke | NIOSH approval (USA) |
| KN95 respirator | Similar filtration class to N95 when genuine | Higher-risk settings where N95 is not available | GB 2626 (China) |
| FFP2 respirator | Filters at least 94% of test particles | As for N95 | EN 149 (Europe) |
How to wear a mask so it actually works
- Clean your hands before touching the mask.
- Cover the nose, mouth and chin, coloured side out if it has one.
- Press the nose wire so it follows the shape of your nose.
- Avoid touching the front while wearing it.
- Remove it by the ear loops or ties, throw it in a closed bin and clean your hands.
Buying masks in bulk
For offices and schools, estimate one mask per person per day of use, plus spare boxes at reception for visitors. Clinics usually need more, because masks are changed between procedures and whenever they become damp.
Ask for the box label: it should show the type, the standard it meets, the manufacturer and the lot number. We confirm which mask types are in stock and the specification of each before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wash and reuse a disposable mask?
No. Washing damages the filter layer. Disposable masks and respirators are made for single use, unless the manufacturer states otherwise.
Is a KN95 the same as an N95?
They are tested to similar filtration levels under different national standards. Fit matters more than the label: a respirator that leaks around the edges protects little more than a loose mask.
Do masks help with smog?
A well-fitting N95, KN95 or FFP2 respirator can reduce the fine particles you breathe in on smoggy days. Loose surgical-style masks offer little protection against smoke and smog particles.
