Home hygiene essentials
Most homes need less than they think: soap at every sink, a bottle of hand sanitizer by the door and for outings, a box of masks and gloves for when someone is ill, and a safe way to disinfect surfaces. Keep alcohol products cool and out of children's reach.
At a glance
- Soap and water first, at every sink.
- One 500 ml pump bottle by the door, small bottles for bags.
- A box of masks and a box of gloves for caring for someone who is ill.
- Store sanitizer cool, high and capped; never in the car in summer.
A household hygiene kit
| Item | Use |
|---|---|
| Liquid soap | Every sink, kitchen and bathrooms |
| Hand sanitizer, 500 ml pump | By the front door, for after shopping and travel |
| Small sanitizer bottles | Bags, for outings and travel |
| Disposable masks | Caring for a sick family member, crowded places, smog days (respirator) |
| Disposable gloves | Cleaning, caring for someone ill, handling waste |
| Surface disinfectant or bleach | Bathrooms and high-touch surfaces |
When someone at home is ill
- Give them their own towel and, if possible, their own room and bathroom.
- Wear a mask when caring for them closely, and ask them to wear one around others.
- Wear gloves when handling their tissues or laundry, then wash your hands.
- Clean and disinfect door handles, taps and the bathroom daily.
- Seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.
Store safely
Keep sanitizer and cleaning products high, capped and away from the kitchen stove. Never decant them into drink bottles. If a child swallows sanitizer, go to the nearest emergency department with the bottle.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a sanitizer dispenser at home?
Usually not. A pump bottle by the door is enough. Dispensers suit homes with many visitors or someone vulnerable to infection.
How long will a 500 ml bottle last at home?
About 200 uses at 2.5 ml each. A family using it 10 times a day would finish it in about three weeks.
