How much alcohol should a hand sanitizer have?

An effective hand sanitizer contains at least 60% ethanol or at least 70% isopropyl alcohol by volume. The two WHO-recommended formulations use 80% ethanol or 75% isopropyl alcohol. More than about 95% is not better, because a little water helps alcohol kill germs and stops it from evaporating before it has worked.

Quick answer

  • Minimum: 60% ethanol or 70% isopropyl alcohol by volume (v/v).
  • WHO formulations: 80% v/v ethanol, or 75% v/v isopropyl alcohol, with glycerol and hydrogen peroxide.
  • Too strong is not better: pure alcohol evaporates too fast and works less well than alcohol with some water.
  • Methanol is toxic and must never be in a hand sanitizer.

Ethanol or isopropyl alcohol: which is better?

Both work against most bacteria and many viruses when used at the right strength.

Why does a percentage on the label matter?

Alcohol is the expensive ingredient, so it is the one most likely to be reduced in a cheap or counterfeit product. A sanitizer that only says "contains alcohol" or "kills 99.9% of germs" without a percentage gives you no way to check. Under Pakistan's PS 5453 standard, PSQCA requires the contents to be labelled with their percentages.

Why is 99% alcohol not better?

Alcohol kills germs by breaking down their proteins and outer membranes, and that process needs some water. Very strong alcohol also evaporates in a few seconds, before it has had time to work. That is why effective sanitizers sit roughly between 60% and 95%, and the WHO formulas at 75 to 80%.

What do v/v and w/w mean?

v/v means volume of alcohol per volume of product. w/w means weight per weight. Because alcohol is lighter than water, the same product shows a lower number in w/w than in v/v. For example, 70% w/w ethanol is roughly 77% v/v. When comparing products, compare like with like.

Ingredients that should never be there

  • Methanol (methyl alcohol, "wood alcohol"): toxic when absorbed through the skin and potentially fatal if swallowed. Health regulators have recalled hand sanitizers found to contain it.
  • 1-propanol (n-propanol) in a product labelled as ethanol-based: a sign of contamination or substitution.
  • Any sanitizer with a strong unfamiliar smell, cloudy liquid when it should be clear, or no ingredient list at all.

What about alcohol-free sanitizers?

Alcohol-free products usually rely on ingredients such as benzalkonium chloride. They are not covered by Pakistan's PS 5453 standard, which applies to alcohol-based sanitizers, and health agencies generally recommend alcohol-based products for hand hygiene. If you choose an alcohol-free product, check what evidence the manufacturer provides.

Frequently asked questions

Is 70% alcohol sanitizer good?

Yes. 70% ethanol or 70% isopropyl alcohol by volume is effective. 70% is above the 60% minimum for ethanol and meets the 70% minimum for isopropyl alcohol.

Is 62% alcohol enough?

62% ethanol is above the 60% minimum recommended by US health agencies. It must be ethanol; isopropyl alcohol needs at least 70%.

Can I make sanitizer at home from rubbing alcohol?

Home mixing often ends up too weak, and the WHO formula is meant for trained producers measuring alcohol strength. Buying a labelled product is safer. Never use methanol or industrial spirit of unknown content.
