Storing hand sanitizer safely in Pakistan's heat

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer is flammable, and heat makes the alcohol evaporate faster. Store it in a cool, shaded place below 30°C, with caps tightly closed, away from stoves, generators, heaters and smoking, and do not leave it in a parked car during summer.

Quick answer

  • Flammable: keep away from flames, sparks and heat sources.
  • Store below 30°C, out of direct sun, caps closed.
  • A parked car in summer becomes far hotter than the outside air: do not leave sanitizer in it.
  • Heat and open caps weaken sanitizer over time as alcohol evaporates.

Where to store it

PlaceSafe?What to do
Shaded storeroom or cupboardYesKeep below 30°C, away from electrical panels
Kitchen near the stoveNoMove away from any flame or hot surface
Generator or UPS roomNoHeat and sparks; store elsewhere

Storing bulk stock

  • Keep 5-litre packs upright on a low shelf in a ventilated room, not stacked on top of each other in the sun.
  • Do not store large amounts of alcohol products near exits, stairs or electrical distribution boards.
  • Keep a dry powder or CO2 fire extinguisher nearby and make sure staff know where it is.
  • Use the oldest stock first and check expiry dates.

Does heat ruin sanitizer?

Heat does not destroy alcohol, but it speeds up evaporation from bottles that are open or poorly sealed. Over weeks in a hot place, an opened bottle can lose strength. Keep caps closed, and replace opened bottles that have sat in heat for a long time.

If sanitizer catches fire

Alcohol flames can be almost invisible in daylight. Do not throw water on a large alcohol fire. Smother small fires, use a suitable extinguisher, get people out and call the fire service (Rescue 1122 where available).

Frequently asked questions

Can a bottle of sanitizer explode in a hot car?

A sealed bottle bursting by itself is unlikely, but heat raises pressure and vapour, leaks become more likely, and any spark or flame near the vapour can ignite it. Do not leave sanitizer in a car in summer.

Is it safe to use sanitizer near a gas stove?

Only once your hands are completely dry. Wet sanitizer on hands can catch fire.

What temperature should sanitizer be stored at?

Below 30°C is a sensible rule, or follow the temperature printed on the label.
