On March 23, 2020, Pakistan imposed its first national lockdown in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The lockdown was implemented with the intention of reducing the virus’s transmission and the burden on the nation’s healthcare system.
Among the measures were the closing of educational institutions, the suspension of travel, both domestically and internationally, and the imposing of limitations on non-essential companies and public gatherings.
Along with social separation, the authorities also advised people to follow basic hygiene practices like mask-wearing and frequent hand washing.
For Pakistanis, however, the lockdown presented serious difficulties, especially for those living in low-income households and the unorganized sector, where they experienced financial difficulties as a result of job losses and less chances for subsistence.
There were reports of resistance and infractions in certain localities, despite efforts to impose limits, and compliance varied between regions.
The first lockdown made clear how important it is for communities, government organizations, and healthcare authorities to work together in order to manage public health emergencies and deal with the associated socioeconomic effects.
